Zoey

Pull up a chair, sis. Get comfortable. Imagine we’re sitting on the porch, the sun is just starting to dip low, and there’s a glass of something cold in your hand. Maybe it’s sweet tea, maybe it’s a little something stronger, whatever your soul needs today.

As I look out across the horizon, I can’t help but get a little misty-eyed thinking about the journey we’ve been on. Can you believe it? We are officially celebrating 8 years of Melanated Campout. Eight years of reclaiming the outdoors, eight years of laughing until our ribs hurt, and eight years of building a family that spans across the country.

When Shani, Cayela, and I first started this back in 2018, we didn’t just want to "go camping." We wanted to create a home. We wanted a place where we didn’t have to lower our voices, explain our hair, or feel like we were "the only ones" in the woods. We wanted a space that felt like a family reunion, minus that one uncle who always starts an argument about the grill.

Today, I want to talk about the heart of this thing. Not just the logistics (though you know we keep those restrooms clean and those showers hot), but the soul of why we do what we do.

More Than Just Tents: It’s the "Cousins" for Me

People ask me all the time, "Jocelyn, what makes Melanated Campout different?" And every single time, my answer is the same: The Cousins.

If you’ve been to one of our events in Cordele, GA, or Lake Blackshear, you know exactly what I’m talking about. You might show up as a solo traveler or a first-time camper, but by the time we hit that Saturday night glow party, you’ve gained 500 new cousins.

There’s a specific kind of magic that happens when Black folks get together in nature. It’s a frequency. It’s the way we look out for each other. It’s the "Good morning, queen" you hear when you’re walking to get your coffee. It’s the way someone will help you stake your tent even if they just met you five minutes ago.

That’s why this 2026 season feels so special. We aren’t just hosting outdoor events for Black adults; we are curating a safe space where you can finally exhale.

Creating a Safe Space in the Great Outdoors

Let’s be real for a second, for a lot of us, the idea of "camping" didn't always feel safe. Historically, the woods weren't always a place of peace for our people. That’s why we are so intentional about every detail of our black camping events.

We chose locations like Lake Blackshear specifically because they offer the beauty of Georgia camping with the security and amenities our community deserves. When you're with us, you don't have to worry about a thing. We’ve got the security handled, the schedule packed with joy, and a community of like-minded people who are all there for the same reason: to unplug from the stress of the world and plug back into ourselves.

Whether you're looking for glamping options or you’re ready to pitch your very first tent with our New Camper Guide, we’ve got your back.

That "Blackity-Black" Magic

Now, don't get it twisted, just because we’re in the woods doesn’t mean we aren’t bringing the culture. We call it the "Blackity-Black" experience for a reason!

Imagine waking up to a yoga session on the grass as the sun rises over the lake. Then, moving into a high-energy kickball tournament or a water gun fight that makes you feel ten years old again. And the nights? Chile, the nights are legendary.

From our signature "I Love the 90's" lip-sync battles to our silent parties under the stars, we prove every year that you can love nature and love the bass in your chest at the same time. We’ve had cousins tell us that they found more healing in one weekend at Melanated Campout than they did in a whole year of "traditional" vacations. That’s because self-care is at the center of everything we do.

8 Years of Lessons and Love

Reflecting on these last eight years, I think about the growth. We started as a small group with a big dream, and now we are a movement. We’ve seen couples get engaged at the campfire. We’ve seen people overcome their fear of the dark. We’ve seen friendships form that have lasted nearly a decade.

The 2026 Homecoming is more than an anniversary; it’s a testament to our resilience and our right to joy. It’s about showing the world that Black people do camp, and we do it with style, soul, and a whole lot of love.

So, if you’ve been sitting on the fence, wondering if this is for you, let me tell you, sis: You belong here. Whether you’re a pro camper with a fancy RV or a beginner who doesn't know a stake from a steak, there is a spot at the table (and the campfire) for you.
