Grab a seat, sis. Pull that chair up close. Let me pour you some of this cold tea, I put a little extra mint in it today just the way we like it.
I was sitting here looking out at the trees, thinking about how far we’ve come. It’s June 2026, and as I look back over the last eight years of Melanated Campout, my heart is just full. People always ask me, "Jocelyn, what is it really like? Is it just sleeping in the woods?"
And I have to laugh, because if you think this is just about "sleeping in the woods," you’re missing the whole seasoning! This isn't a survival show; it’s a soul-restoration project. It’s a family reunion with 500 cousins you haven't met yet. It’s what happens when we decide that the great outdoors belongs to us, too.
So, let’s get into it. If you’ve been hovering over that "Register" button, or if the group chat is currently 400 messages deep trying to decide if y’all are "outdoorsy" enough, this guide is for you.
The 8-Year Legacy: Why We Built This
Eight years ago, we started with a simple idea: Black people deserve to be at peace in nature. We deserve to unplug from the headlines, the emails, and the "strong Black woman" expectations and just… be.
I remember the very first campout. We were nervous! Would people show up? Would they feel safe? But then the music started. Then the smell of the charcoal hit the air. And suddenly, the woods didn't feel like a place where we were "out of our element." It felt like home.
Since then, Melanated Campout has grown into one of the premier outdoor events for Black adults, but the mission hasn't changed. We’ve built a legacy of safety, joy, and "Blackity-Black" excellence in the middle of the Georgia pines.
The "Cousin" Factor: You’re Never Alone
The biggest thing that sets us apart from any other Black camping events is the community. We call everyone "Camp Cousin" for a reason.
If it’s your first time, you might feel a little anxious. "What if I can’t set up my tent?" "What if I’m coming solo?" Listen, let me tell you, the moment you drive through those gates, you have a village. You’ll see a cousin walking by who will help you hammer in a stake. You’ll find a group of ladies at the sunrise yoga session who will invite you to breakfast.
We’ve had people come as strangers and leave as godparents to each other's kids. That’s the magic of the vibe. It’s a safe space where you don’t have to look over your shoulder. You can just exhale.
The Vibe Check: What Actually Happens Out There?
People think camping means sitting in the dark, bored. Girl, please. We stay busy, but only the kind of "busy" that feeds your spirit.
1. The Legendary 90’s Party
We take our themes seriously. Our "I Love the 90's" glow party is the stuff of legends. Imagine a huge tent, neon lights everywhere, and a DJ playing nothing but the hits that make you want to do the Butterfly or the Roger Rabbit.

2. High-Energy Fun
Whether it’s the massive outdoor water gun fight (where nobody is safe, not even me!) or the giant Bear Pong challenges, we play like kids again. There’s something so healing about laughing until your stomach hurts while standing in the grass.
3. Soul Care & Wellness
It’s not all parties. We have quiet moments, too. Healing hikes, meditation, and workshops on everything from small business tips to outdoor survival. It’s about balance. It’s about self-care in a way that feels natural.

Camping for Beginners: No, You Don't Have to "Suffer"
I know what some of you are thinking: "Jocelyn, I like my AC and my hot shower."
Me too, sis! That’s why we do things differently. If you aren't ready for a tent, we have options for RVs and glamping. And even if you are in a tent, we make sure you have access to clean restrooms and hot showers. We have security. We have a New Camper Guide that walks you through exactly what to pack so you aren't "roughing it" more than you want to.
Camping for beginners is our specialty. We want you to love this as much as we do, so we remove the "struggle" part of the equation.
Why You Need to Book Now
We are currently in Phase 2 of our 2026 season planning. If you missed the June 1st price break, don't trip, but you do want to move fast. Our next major price increase hits on August 15th.
Every year, the "I'll wait and see" crowd ends up stuck in the group chat while we’re out here at Lake Blackshear having the time of our lives. Don't be that cousin!
