Chile, pull up a chair. Grab your fan and a glass of something cold, because we need to have a real “porch talk” moment.
It’s 2026. We’ve got cars that almost drive themselves, AI writing our grocery lists, and the world is moving faster than a Southern grandma when she hears the first notes of “Before I Let Go.” But in the middle of all this “future,” people keep asking me the same question: “Jocelyn, does a Black-only camping event still really matter?”
After eight years of building Melanated Campout, eight years of watching sunsets over Lake Blackshear, and eight years of seeing our people reclaim the great outdoors, my answer is a resounding, “Now more than ever, baby.”
Let me tell you why.
Eight Years of ‘Blackity-Black’ Magic
When we started this journey nearly a decade ago, people looked at us like we had two heads. “Black people don’t camp,” they said. Or, “Why does it have to be just for us?”
But we knew something they didn’t. We knew that for too long, the woods didn’t always feel like a place where we could just be. Whether it was the history we carry in our bones or just the feeling of being the “only one” at a predominantly white campground, there was a gap. We weren’t just missing out on the fresh air; we were missing out on the peace that belongs to us, too.
Fast forward to today, and Melanated Campout has turned into a whole movement. What started as a small gathering has evolved into a full-blown homecoming. When you walk through our campsite in Cordele, Georgia, you aren’t just seeing tents and RVs. You’re seeing legacy. You’re seeing three generations of a family sharing a meal. You’re seeing Black men greeting each other with that “I see you, King” energy that heals the soul.

Why Black Outdoor Spaces Still Matter
I saw a report recently from Kampgrounds of America (KOA) saying that even in 2024, only 11% of campers were Black. Now, we know we’ve been outside more since then, but that number still hits different. The camping industry has historically leaned one way, and while the world is changing, there is something sacred about a space designed specifically for our comfort, our music, and our joy.
At a Black camping event in Georgia, you don’t have to explain your hair wrap. You don’t have to worry if your music is “too loud” when the Frankie Beverly starts playing. You don’t have to code-switch. You just get to breathe. That’s not about exclusion; it’s about sanctuary.
In 2026, the world is loud. Our phones are buzzing, the news is heavy, and the grind is real. Melanated Campout is the “Do Not Disturb” sign for your soul. It’s where we remind ourselves that we deserve to take up space, not just in the boardroom or on the stage, but under the stars.
This Isn’t Just a Festival, It’s a Reunion
A lot of people hear “camping festival” and they think of mud, loud EDM music, and people losing their minds. That’s not us, Cousin.
Think of MC more like a massive, high-energy family reunion where you actually like everyone there. Yes, we’ve got the Motor Speedway Madness and the themed parties, but we also have the “Soft Life” moments.
We’re talking about:
- The Silent Party: Where you can catch two people dancing closely by their tent, just vibing to the same beat in their headphones.
- The Food: Because you know we aren’t just eating beans out of a can. Our meal plans are a whole love language.
- The Connection: Walking through the gallery of memories from the last eight years and seeing how many friendships, and even some “Campout Couples”, started right here on this grass.

“But Jocelyn, I Don’t Do Tents!”
Girl, I hear you! If I had a nickel for every time a sister told me, “I don’t do outside because of the bugs and the ground,” I’d be retired on a private island.
But listen, it’s 2026, we have options! Whether you are a hardcore tent camper or a “I need my AC and a bathroom” kind of traveler, there’s a spot for you. We see more and more of our community leaning into the RV life. There is nothing like pulling up in your rig, setting up your outdoor rug, and having your home on wheels right there in the middle of the magic.
And if you are a total newbie? We’ve got you. Check out our New Camper Guide before you pack a single bag. We take the “scary” out of the woods and replace it with wonder.

Homecoming 2026: The Legacy Energy
This year is special. We’re calling it Homecoming 2026. After eight years, we aren’t just an event anymore; we’re a tradition.
We’re inviting the “O.G.” campers back to see how much we’ve grown, and we’re opening the gates wide for the first-timers who have been watching our videos on TikTok and Instagram for years, wondering if they should finally take the plunge.
The energy this year is about reunion. It’s about looking at how far we’ve come as a community. We’ve gone from being “the only ones” at the park to owning the whole park for a weekend. That’s power. That’s magic.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Is this only for experienced campers?
Absolutely not! Most of our campers were “indoor people” until they found us. We provide plenty of resources, and our “Camp Cousins” (the veteran campers) are always willing to lend a hand or a tent stake.
What should I bring?
Comfort is queen. Check out our packing list ideas, but the basics are a good attitude, some sturdy shoes, and your best “Blackity-Black” camp outfits.
Where exactly is it?
We gather at the beautiful Lake Blackshear in Cordele, Georgia. It’s a stunning backdrop for all the activities we have planned.
Are kids allowed?
While we love the babies, Melanated Campout is designed as an adult-centered space for those 21 and over. It’s your time to be “un-mom” and “un-dad” for a few days!
