Eight years of making room for us outside
For eight years, Melanated Campout has been creating something many of us did not realize we were missing: a place to be outdoors without having to leave our culture, our comfort, or our joy at the gate.
This is not camping where you are expected to know every knot, own a closet full of tactical gear, or pretend a cold shower builds character. This is camping with real bathrooms, hot showers, 24/7 security, organized activities, and enough options to let you choose your own version of outside.
Want to bring your tent? Come on.
Prefer an RV? Pull up.
Want a glamping setup or villa where somebody else has already handled the heavy lifting? Baby, we understand completely.
The beauty of these black camping events is that you do not have to prove anything. You can be adventurous, cozy, social, quiet, fly, silly, or all of the above before lunch.
Over the years, Camp Cousins have made memories through watergun battles, line dancing, yoga, comedy shows, campfire conversations, business sessions, silent parties, and those long meals where the food is good but the conversation is even better.
That is the legacy: not just putting Black folks in nature, but creating an environment where we feel safe enough to exhale in it.
Camp Cousins are the heart of the story
Ask anybody who has attended and they will probably start with an activity.
“I loved Dinner in Orange.”
“The watergun battle was everything.”
“The live band had us acting brand new.”
But if you listen closely, the story always circles back to the people.
One returning Camp Cousin described taking a deep breath by the lake, dodging water balloons, and then sliding into line dances afterward. That combination says everything about the weekend: peaceful one minute, cutting up the next, and completely yourself through all of it.
Another first-timer shared that the fellowship and welcoming energy made them feel an immediate sense of community. They arrived not knowing anybody and left not wanting to leave.
And then there are the folks who come with their twelve best friends for Dinner in Orange, only to discover that the Friday night memories become the part they keep replaying all year.
