Girl, pull up a chair and let’s talk for a second. You know that feeling when you’re at a family reunion, the music is just right, the food smells like heaven, and you can finally: and I mean finally: just breathe? Now, imagine that same feeling, but instead of your auntie’s backyard, you’re surrounded by towering trees, a sparkling lake, and hundreds of people who feel like the cousins you never knew you had.

That is the magic of Melanated Campout.

For a long time, the world tried to tell us that "Black people don’t camp." But we’ve been out here, honey! We just needed a space that was built with us in mind. For the last eight years, we’ve been proving that the great outdoors is our playground too. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or someone who thinks "camping" means a hotel with a balcony, we’ve created a sanctuary where joy, culture, and safety aren’t just words: they’re the whole vibe.

It Started with a Birthday and a Vision

Before we were the largest Black-centric adult camping festival in the South, we were just a group of friends. Our co-founder, Cayela, organized a simple camping trip at Red Top Mountain to celebrate her birthday. She wanted to be in nature, but she wanted to do it with her tribe.

What started as a small gathering quickly realized a deep, unspoken hunger in our community. Black adults were looking for outdoor events for Black adults that didn't require us to "code-switch" or look over our shoulders. We wanted to play our music, laugh as loud as we wanted, and wake up to the smell of coffee and community. Eight years later, that birthday trip has evolved into a movement.

Why Safety and "Blackity-Black" Vibes Matter

Let’s be real for a minute. For many of us, the woods haven’t always felt like a safe place. History has its stories, and even today, being "the only one" at a traditional campground can feel exhausting. You spend more time wondering if you’re being watched than you do enjoying the scenery.

At Melanated Campout, we reclaim that space. When we say it’s a "Blackity-Black" experience, we mean everything from the playlist to the programming is designed to make you feel seen and celebrated. We provide professional security, clean restrooms, and hot showers because, let’s face it, we like our nature with a side of comfort.

This is a space of "no explanations needed." You don't have to explain why you're wearing a silk bonnet in your tent or why the line dance for "Before I Let Go" is a mandatory group activity. You can just be.

You’re Never Truly Solo: Meet Your 500 New Cousins

One of my favorite things to tell new campers is that you might arrive solo, but you’ll never leave that way. By Saturday night, the person at the campsite next to you isn’t just a neighbor; they’re family.

We see it every year: groups sharing snacks, helping each other set up tents, and bonding over a shared love for the culture. It’s why we call our attendees "Cousins." Whether we're doing sunset yoga, competing in a lip-sync battle, or vibing at our signature glow-in-the-dark party, the connection is instant.

From Tents to Glamping: Camping on Your Terms

If you’re sitting there thinking, "Girl, I am not sleeping on the ground," I hear you! We believe camping for beginners should be accessible to everyone. That’s why we offer everything from traditional tent spaces to luxury glamping setups.

Our glamping options are for the cousins who want the "outdoorsy" photos without the "outdoorsy" struggle. Think chandeliers in tents, comfortable beds, and all the aesthetic vibes your Instagram feed can handle. We even have workshops like Camping 101 to teach you the basics, so you feel confident and empowered in the wild.

More Than Just a Weekend: It's Self-Care

In a world that constantly asks us to be strong, to be resilient, and to keep going, Melanated Campout is your permission slip to stop. It’s a chance to unplug from the stress of the city and plug back into yourself.

There’s something healing about watching the sunrise over Lake Blackshear or sitting around a campfire grill sharing stories. We aren't just organizing black camping events; we are building a sanctuary for Black joy.
