Zoey

Girl, let me tell you something about a real homecoming: it does not always happen on a college campus with a marching band, a football game, and somebody yelling your name across the quad.

Sometimes, homecoming looks like driving into Cordele, Georgia with your cooler packed, your favorite camp chair in the trunk, and a little nervousness sitting in your chest because you do not know anybody yet.

Then you pull up.

Somebody waves you toward your spot. Somebody compliments your outfit. Somebody asks if you need help getting settled. Before you know it, you are laughing with folks you met twelve minutes ago like y’all have been cousins since birth.

That is the magic of Melanated Campout.

And at Homecoming 2026, the Camp Cousins are still the heart of it all.

Definition Snippet: What is Melanated Campout?
Melanated Campout is a Black-focused outdoor camping experience that brings together culture, community, and nature in a safe, welcoming space for Black adults. Guests can enjoy organized activities, comfort-focused lodging options, and a community atmosphere where strangers become Camp Cousins.

Eight years of making room for us outside

For eight years, Melanated Campout has been creating something many of us did not realize we were missing: a place to enjoy nature without leaving our culture, comfort, or joy at the gate.

This is not camping where you have to know every knot, own a closet full of tactical gear, or pretend that a cold shower builds character. This is Georgia camping with real amenities and room to choose your own experience.

Want to bring your tent? Come on.

Prefer an RV? Pull up.

Want glamping, a villa, a cabin, or another comfort-focused option where somebody else has handled some of the heavy lifting? Baby, we understand completely.

Homecoming 2026 takes place September 25–27, 2026, at Lake Blackshear in Cordele, Georgia. The event is for adults 21 and older, and guests can select the lodging setup that works best for their budget, comfort level, and camping style.

The experience includes:

The mission is simple and powerful: help Black people fall in love with nature and bring culture to the woods.

That is the legacy. Not just putting Black folks outdoors, but creating an environment where we feel safe enough to relax, laugh, try something new, and exhale.

The Camp Cousins make the campout

The activities are fun, yes. The music is fun. The food, dancing, games, and late-night conversations? Absolutely.

But ask what really makes the weekend special, and the answer always comes back to the people.

It is the solo traveler who arrives wondering if they made a mistake and leaves with several new friends.

It is the first-time camper who is nervous about setting up, then discovers there is support, guidance, and somebody nearby willing to help.

It is the returning attendee who keeps coming back because the weekend feels like a reset they can count on.

It is the group of friends who planned one little getaway and somehow created memories they will still be talking about at Thanksgiving.

And yes, approximately 30% of attendees arrive solo. That means you will not be the only one coming by yourself. Solo does not mean lonely here. It means you are open to meeting people, finding your rhythm, and letting connection happen naturally.

You may arrive with your own people, but you leave with more people.

That is the Camp Cousin experience.

The Blackity-Black energy is the point

You know how some events say they are “for everybody,” but you still end up explaining the playlist, the jokes, the food, the outfits, and why everybody suddenly has choreography when the right song comes on?

That is not the energy here.

These black camping events are built around Black joy in all its forms:

You can wake up and choose yoga. You can join an organized game. You can spend time by the lake. You can meet new people over a meal, dance under the lights, or sit back in your chair and mind your beautiful business.

There is no gold medal for doing the most.

The weekend is designed so you can connect at your own pace.

That is what makes this more than a traditional camping festival. It is an experience where culture and nature get to exist together. You do not have to choose between comfort and adventure, or between community and quiet time.

Homecoming 2026 is for your whole self

Homecoming means return.

Return to your people.

Return to laughter.

Return to the part of yourself that gets buried under work emails, caregiving, errands, deadlines, and everybody else’s needs.

That is why outdoor events for Black adults matter. They give us space to remember that rest can be communal. Joy can be planned. Friendship can begin beside a campfire, over a shared meal, or in the middle of a water fight.

And yes, grown adults can still run around with water blasters and laugh until their stomachs hurt. In fact, I highly recommend it.

If you are new to camping, start with the New Camper Guide. It covers what to pack, how to think through your setup, and how to prepare without opening twelve browser tabs at midnight.

You do not need to be “outdoorsy” to belong here.

You do not need expensive gear.

You do not need years of experience.

You just need to be willing to show up and let yourself enjoy something different.
