Eight Years of Building Something That Feels Like Us
Eight years is a long time to keep showing up with heart.
What began as a birthday camping trip at Red Top Mountain grew into a full community experience because the need was real. Black folks wanted to enjoy the outdoors, but we also wanted to feel comfortable while doing it. We wanted nature without the side order of isolation. We wanted camping without feeling like we had to code-switch, shrink ourselves, or wonder whether we belonged there.
So the Campout became bigger than a weekend away.
Over the years, Camp Cousins have arrived as strangers and left with new friends, new group chats, and stories they still tell long after the tents are packed. Some come with their best friends. Some come with their partners. Some pull up solo, quietly hoping they won’t feel out of place.
And then something beautiful happens.
A person who was nervous on Friday is laughing with a new crew by Saturday. Somebody helps a neighbor figure out their tent. A conversation by the fire turns into a friendship. A cousin who came unsure whether camping was “their thing” finds themselves dancing under the stars and already asking when registration opens again.
That is the legacy.
The Camp Cousins Are the Heart of the Story
Let’s be clear: the trees are beautiful, Lake Blackshear is a whole vibe, and the programming gives everybody plenty to do. But the real magic has always been the Camp Cousins.
That word is more than a nickname. It is an invitation.
It says, “You don’t have to know everybody before you get here.”
It says, “There is room for you at this table.”
It says, “You can come exactly as you are, experienced camper, first-timer, social butterfly, quiet observer, planner, napper, line-dance champion, or somebody who just wants to sit near the water and breathe.”
The community is intentionally welcoming without feeling forced. You can connect while setting up, grabbing a meal, joining a game, walking by the lake, or standing in line wondering whether you packed enough sunscreen. Nobody expects you to perform. Nobody is grading your outdoor skills.

Why This Feels Like a Safe Space for Black Adults
We talk about safety in more than one way.
Yes, the practical details matter. Melanated Campout prioritizes professional security, clean restrooms, hot showers, organized programming, and a gated environment. Those things allow you to relax because you are not spending the whole weekend trying to figure out whether the basics are handled.
But emotional safety matters, too.
It feels different to be in the outdoors surrounded by people who understand your humor, your culture, your need for rest, and your desire to have a good time without unnecessary drama. You do not have to explain why the line dance is mandatory. You do not have to apologize for being joyful. You do not have to wonder if you are the only one.
That is why these are more than outdoor events for Black adults. They are spaces where Black adults can reconnect with themselves and each other in nature.
