When people ask me what makes this weekend different, I could talk about the schedule. I could tell you about the water fight, live music, Dinner in Orange, line dancing, yoga, comedy, Camping 101, and all the other ways we get into a little grown-folks fun.
But honestly? The real answer is the people.
The cousins are the heartbeat.
These are the kinds of stories that come up again and again in our community:
The solo traveler who arrives nervous
She almost did not come.
She had the ticket. She had the bags. She had all the questions. But she did not know anybody and wondered if she would spend the weekend sitting quietly by her tent, pretending to be busy.
Then somebody struck up a conversation. Another cousin invited her to join an activity. Somebody else said, “Come on, girl, we’re going this way.”
By Sunday, she had a new group chat, a few inside jokes, and plans to come back next year.

The cousin who finds a hammock by the water and realizes she has not heard her own thoughts in months.

It means people have trusted this community with their weekends, their celebrations, their first camping experiences, their birthdays, their girls’ trips, their solo adventures, and sometimes their healing.
For eight years, Melanated Campout has created a space where Black adults can experience the outdoors without having to leave culture at the door.
