Pull up a chair, sis. Get comfortable. Maybe pour yourself a little something cold, because we need to have a real heart-to-heart.
You know how people always say "family is who you choose"? Well, at Melanated Campout, we don’t just choose family, we find them in the middle of the Georgia woods, usually somewhere between a sunrise yoga session and a late-night line dance under the stars.
For eight years now, we’ve been building something more than just a weekend getaway. We’ve been building a legacy of Black joy, safety, and radical rest. We call ourselves "Camp Cousins" for a reason. It’s that feeling when you see someone you’ve never met, but you know their auntie probably makes the same mac-and-cheese yours does. It’s a soul-deep recognition.
As we gear up for our 2026 Homecoming, I wanted to take a minute to spotlight the real heart of this movement: the cousins themselves. Their stories are the reason we do what we do.
The 15-Hour Drive to "Home"
Let me tell you about Tiana. Now, Tiana lives up in Connecticut. When she first heard about our black camping events, she was intrigued, but the distance was… well, it was a lot. But something in her spirit told her she needed this.
She packed up her gear and drove fifteen hours down to Georgia. Fifteen hours, chile! When she finally pulled into Lake Blackshear, she told me her guard was up. She was tired, she was solo, and she wasn't sure if she’d actually fit in.
But within thirty minutes of arriving? A group of seasoned campers saw her struggling with her tent poles and hopped right in to help. By the time the sun went down, she wasn't "the girl from Connecticut" anymore. She was just Cousin Tiana.
"My heart just opened," she told us later. "I didn't realize how much I was carrying until I was surrounded by people who just got it. I found a family I didn't even know I was looking for."
"I Don't Do Outside", Until I Did
We see a lot of first-timers who walk into the woods with a healthy dose of skepticism. You know the vibe: "I like nature, but I like air conditioning more."
One of my favorite stories comes from a group of three best friends who called themselves the "Hotel Only Crew." They showed up with brand-new gear (tags still on!) and a lot of nervous energy. They were worried about the bugs, the bathrooms, and the "outside-ness" of it all.
But that’s the magic of Melanated Campout. We aren't out here struggling! Between the clean, hot showers and our New Camper Guide, we make sure you’re taken care of. By Saturday morning, these ladies were leading the pack on a healing hike. By Sunday, they were already asking for the 2026 dates so they could book their spot for next year.

The Healing Power of the Hammock
Then there are the stories that remind us why these outdoor events for black adults are a necessity, not just a luxury.
We had one cousin join us who had recently received a difficult health diagnosis. She came with her adult children, not because she wanted to go on an adventure, but because she just wanted to be. She spent a large part of her weekend in a hammock by the lake, watching the water and listening to the distant sound of laughter from the kickball field.
She told us that for the first time in months, she wasn't a "patient." She wasn't a "warrior." She was just a woman in nature, surrounded by her people. That’s the "Blackity-Black" energy we talk about, it’s the permission to be soft, to be still, and to be supported.
Why This Space is Sacred
We know that for our community, being "outside" hasn't always felt safe. That’s why we’ve spent nearly a decade curating an experience that prioritizes your peace of mind. When you pull up to our black camping event in Georgia, you aren't looking over your shoulder. You’re looking at your cousins.
With 24/7 security, professional organization, and a community that looks out for one another, Melanated Campout is the "safe harbor" we all need. Whether you're a solo traveler (did you know 30% of our cousins come alone?) or bringing the whole squad, you’re coming home.
The 8-Year Legacy
From our humble beginnings to becoming the largest campout of its kind east of the Mississippi, our mission hasn't changed: we want Black people to fall in love with nature. We’ve seen marriages start here, businesses launch here, and lifelong friendships solidified over a campfire grill.
As we look toward September 2026, we’re aiming for 1,000 cousins. That’s 1,000 stories. 1,000 laughs. 1,000 moments of pure, unadulterated joy.
Will you be one of them?
FAQ: What New Cousins Always Ask
Do I have to know how to camp?
Girl, no! Most of our cousins are beginners. We have Camping 101 workshops, and there’s always a "pro" nearby ready to help you out. Check out our New Camper Guide for everything you need to pack.
Is it safe for solo travelers?
Absolutely. About 30% of our attendees come solo. We have mixers and group activities designed to make sure you leave with 500 new cousins.
What if I don't want to sleep in a tent?
We hear you! We offer RV sites (with hookups) and glamping options for those who want that "outdoorsy" feel with a little more cushion.
Are there real bathrooms?
Yes! We prioritize comfort. Our locations feature permanent, clean restroom facilities and hot showers. No "roughing it" in the way you’re thinking!
